Honeywell shares are under pressure Thursday, despite the industrial conglomerate exceeding expectations for first-quarter sales and earnings. The culprits: Softer guidance for the current quarter and some uncertainty about a recovery in some of its key businesses. Honeywell Why we own it: Honeywell is a provider of industrial technology solutions to companies in various industries. Building automation was down year over year as growth in the longer-cycle solutions business was offset by continued weakness in the shorter-cycle products business. The Nasdaq sank 2% on Friday as Netflix dropped nearly 11% post-earnings and Club stock Nvidia fell 10%, entering bear market territory but still up more than 50% in 2024. Following a much stronger-than-expected March retail sales report last month, fresh economic data and six Club stock earnings will take center stage in the week ahead. While lower rates may help stock multiples, that is not a sustainable path to higher equity prices over time. Earnings : The latest quarterly reporting season is starting to ramp into high gear with six Club names set to report next week. If history is any guide, Walgreens Boots Alliance may fare better after getting tossed from the Dow Jones Industrial Average . In fact, data shows that betting on a stock that's leaving the Dow is often a better trade for investors than buying shares of a stock that's entering the 127-year-old average. What history shows Alcoa was the best-performing stock among the last 10 outgoing Dow members. For example, Honeywell International surged more than 40% one year after joining the Dow, while UnitedHealth rallied nearly 28%. General Electric , the last of the original 12 Dow stocks, plunged about 58% one year after leaving the average in 2018.

Spirit Airlines ' fourth-quarter loss narrowed to nearly $184 million, but its CEO said the carrier is on a path back to profitability and that the domestic air travel market is improving. Spirit still expects to lose money in the first quarter, however, and said it expects revenue of between $1.25 billion and $1.28 billion, above analysts' forecasts. The carrier plans for 2024 capacity to be flat to up mid-single digits compared with last year, and up 1.5% in the first quarter, Spirit said. Spirit said it expects to have an average of 25 Airbus aircraft grounded this year because of the Pratt & Whitney engine issues. Spirit said expects to have 215 airplanes in its fleet by the end of the year.

With Wednesday's hot purchasing managers' numbers that demonstrate the strength of both the service and manufacturing portions of the economy, it's even more doubtful that we will get rate cuts soon. After all, inflation is the most ruinous force against us, and we must be sure it does not come back. We don't want rate cuts because the economy is weak. Additionally, rate cuts foment inflation, and that won't help the stock market, either. CNBC's Jim Cramer suggested an uneven start to earnings season makes the Federal Reserve's March decision on interest rates hard to predict. Cramer unpacked earnings results from some of the many companies that reported on Tuesday. Higher rates lead DR Horton to offer mortgage incentives so that customers would buy homes, Cramer said. But some companies' reports showed inflation is still a real issue, he added. "We have so many stocks that've rallied because buyers were betting on low inflation, a strong economy, and a series of rate cuts," Cramer said.

Spirit Airlines on Friday raised its financial forecast for the fourth quarter of 2023, sending shares soaring more than 30% after a rout earlier this week that followed a judge's ruling that blocks JetBlue Airways from buying the budget carrier. Spirit said in a filing that it expects revenue to come in at about $1.3 billion, at the high end of its earlier forecast, thanks to strong bookings at the end of the year. The airline said in the filing that it had $1.3 billion of liquidity at the end of 2023. Spirit said Friday it expects compensation from Pratt & Whitney, a unit of RTX, in connection with that engine issue. Spirit plans to hold a quarterly call with analysts on Feb. 8 to discuss results and its outlook.
